Sovereign Bodies (sculptural version I)

Abyss, video, 9 minutes, 5 different soundtracks via headphones and MP3 players
Sweets for my Sweet, digital animation, 7 minutes, marzipan and gold foil

The original video works were developed in 2016 and 2017. In 2021 I incorporated both works together into one sculptural installation. „Sovereign Bodies“ is an ongoing series of works focusing on relations between flesh, biopolitics, representative architecture, virtual spaces and the absurd.

The series revolves around questions of the corporeal sovereignty in biopolitical societies, starting from the thesis that in a democracy (in contrast to monarchies or dictatorships) there is no tangible body in which power is incarnated – the physical space of power is, so to speak, „empty” (Claude Lefort), instead there are millions of bodies that are “regulated towards life” (following Foucault´s definition of “biopolitics”). To examine the relationship between sovereignty and the body, the works focus on spaces of power.
