Raising Hackles

Print on PVC, plaster, artificial furr, streamer, video projection, 17 minutes loop, 2018

„Raising Hackles“ is an installation dealing with human´s animality and methods of camouflage. A drawing covers a corner of the room like a shower curtain. Entering this separate space, you experience words and patterns projected onto an organic shaped plaster object. The formerly scientific text was altered, now it addresses the viewer directly, blurring the lines of perception.

Mimicry and camouflage enables you to appear to be other than you are. You may feign death when you detect a predator, or may quickly conceal yourself such as you arching your back and raising your hackles, to make yourself appear larger than normal. The deceiver knows that others have minds, different minds can believe different things are true and it can make another mind believe that something false is actually true. True deception requires the deceiver to have the mental capacity to assess different representations of reality. The transmission of misinformation by one of you to another, of the same or different species, in a way that propagates beliefs that are not true.
